Buildings

You’re walking down a moonlit street
Your surroundings, too, are brightly lit,
And what else can be brighter than stars
Than gigantic cuboids coated with glass
Or grey mixes, bricks, sandstone or lime
To which man has devoted all his time
From gates, statues, archways and domes
To complexes, suites and apartment homes
So strong, tall and rigid they stand
Perpendicular to the plane of land
What with eternal, endless sights as this
The mind wanders back to an age of peace
When man wasn’t obsessed with 90 degrees
When nothing blocked that gentle breeze
When nothing stood between mountains and trees
When nothing, so boldly, did face the seas.
But now they all stand bolt upright
As living evidences of human might
No other creation has defied nature more
Nothing artificial has ever evolved before
To cement and glass from stone and wood
Millenniums hence they stand as they stood
And inside these boxes we all stay
Behind locked doors, to keep ‘them’ away
And windows, so we don’t feel shut in
Show all that should and should not be seen.
I wonder why we all feel so protected
When flanked by these giants we’ve erected
But we do, and hence forever they will stand
Perpendicular to the plane of land.
